Chimney Wind Caps

Are you having problems with the wind blowing down through your chimney bringing smoke back into the room?  This can be an issue if your home is off of a canyon, near a slope, by the ocean, or in the mountains.  We've even seen the problem occur when trees will grow to a point where they cause a wind block that forces air down the chimney, or when your neighbor (or you) adds a second story that's height extends above the nearby chimney.

Is there a solution?  Many times a chimney wind cap will help or even resolve this problem.  The top of the cap works on the same premise as a weather vane where it spins on a turret, but in this case by doing so it turns its back on the wind and creates a barrier that stops the wind from causing  downdrafts down the chimney.

In addition, some of its features are:

bullet

A spark arrestor screen to provide protection against sparks and hot embers flying out of the chimney as well as protecting against birds and small animals from getting in from the top

bullet

The wind cap extends the chimney height which can assist in a better draw when using the fireplace

bullet

Helps to keep rain from getting into the chimney flue

The pictures above show the stages of installation of a chimney wind cap.

As you can (hopefully) tell from the picture on the right, this chimney is located directly off of one of our many canyons.  It provided an excellent solution to an ongoing smoking problem by diverting the winds from going down the chimney.

By adding the wind cap, the chimney height is extended which can help with the draw when using the fireplace.

The cap secures very well to the top chimney flue tile, but is very easy to remove and reinstall when the chimney is inspected and swept.

Because of how the chimney wind cap mounts to the chimney flue, it is essential to have the size and shape of the flue before we can special order the cap.  It generally takes approximately three to six weeks for the cap to be manufactured and sent to us.  We do require payment in advance.

We strongly recommend that you have us come out and take the measurements.  If you provide us with measurements and the cap does not fit, there are no returns.  If we take the measurements and there is a problem, we take the responsibility for it.

Since we do have to charge a fee for coming out and taking the measurements, the ideal situation is to incorporate in the evaluation and if necessary the sweeping of the chimney at the same time.  We also do need to charge an additional fee for the cap's installation when it comes in.

If you need the more standard stainless chimney cap and not the wind cap, we do carry the most commonly used size on the truck and they can be installed during the visit.  Please visit our  Chimney Caps Page for more information about them.
