Always have
chimney inspected and
swept if necessary before installing the gas log set.
Proper sizing of
gas logs is very important for appearance and safety.
Buy darker color
gas logs--such as Oak. Lighter colored logs--such as White Birch, quickly
develop ugly smoke stains where the flame touches the logs.
Do not buy gas
logs for heat. They are primarily designed for aesthetics--NOT FOR HEAT!
Always have your
gas log set installed by a professional installer specifically trained in gas.
After
installation, gas logs should be tested with a Combustible Gas Detector by the
installer to ensure against toxic gas spillage coming into the living area.
A chimney cap is
recommended to keep out birds, rodents and other animals since the damper will
always be open.
Be advised,
Uniform Mechanical Code does require damper to be locked open which can result
in heat loss in the home.
Consider a
Gas Fireplace Insert
in your masonry fireplace before making your gas log purchase. They are
convenient, a remote control is available, up to 80% energy efficient, provide a
nice source of heat in the living area, have an attractive display and are
sealed against causing any heat loss.
