Tips for making your gas log decision
Please read the tips listed below for more information that you should know before making your decision.
bullet

Always have chimney inspected and swept if necessary before installing the gas log set.

bullet

Proper sizing of gas logs is very important for appearance and safety.

bullet

Buy darker color gas logs--such as Oak.  Lighter colored logs--such as White Birch, quickly develop ugly smoke stains where the flame touches the logs.

bullet

Do not buy gas logs for heat.  They are primarily designed for aesthetics--NOT FOR HEAT!

bullet

Always have your gas log set installed by a professional installer specifically trained in gas.

bullet

After installation, gas logs should be tested with a Combustible Gas Detector by the installer to ensure against toxic gas spillage coming into the living area.

bullet

A chimney cap is recommended to keep out birds, rodents and other animals since the damper will always be open.

bullet

Be advised, Uniform Mechanical Code does require damper to be locked open which can result in heat loss in the home.

bullet

Consider a Gas Fireplace Insert in your masonry fireplace before making your gas log purchase.  They are convenient, a remote control is available, up to 80% energy efficient, provide a nice source of heat in the living area, have an attractive display and are sealed against causing any heat loss.
